5 x Great Grandfather
9th Generation
Born - 19th May 1806- Carriden, Linlithgow
Died - 5th November 1869 - Carriden, Linlithgow
Richard’s parents were Robert Hamilton and Janet Ferguson and he was born in Carriden in the same area, around the same time, as many others in this story. They must have all known one another, worked down the pits together, drank together, laughed and cried together and helped one another …

Another indication of how close all their lives were knitted together back then is the lives is siblings led. His sister Janet Hamilton married a Thomas Hamilton (another Hamilton) and stayed in Carriden, she lived until she was 75 years old. In 1851 her mother was living with her – aged 68 at the time.

His brother Archibald married Janet McAshion in 1828, they were married 20 years. His wife Janet put this gravestone up. They didn’t have any children and lived their life in Carriden.
His brother Fergusson married Elizabeth Sneddon and had 6 children together. He also lived his life in Carriden as an Iron Stone miner but only lived to 52.
His brother Robert died in 1846, he had married Alison Easton in 1842 They had a son Robert and daughter Margaret. Alison never remarried, she worked as a sewer (someone who is skilled in sewing and constructing garments) .

Richard’s first wife was Helen Donaldson, they were married in 1824 had a son named Richard. Helen died shortly afterwards and I have no records of Richard surviving childhood.
Richard the married my ancestor, Janet Ferguson, 10 years later. She was his first cousin. Richard’s mother and Janet’s father were brother and sister. His wife had the same maiden name has his mothers, how confusing all these people with the same names aere! They had 7 children together and they all lived a long a happy life which is detailed in Janet Hamilton’s story.

Richard’s death certificate shows that he suffered from heart disease for 8 years, a long and painful end of life this man had.
Wife – Janet Fergusson
