5th Great Grandfather
9th Generation
Born - Northern Ireland
Died - 13th December 1873, Hamilton, Scotland
We know from John’s daughter’s birth certificate that they lived in Northern Ireland. There were in Ballinliss in 1832 and Sligo by 1836 and at some point over the next 20 years the family moved to Scotland.
John lived the rest of his days in the country of Lanark. I haven’t been able to uncover John on any of the census records therefore the only record I have for him is his death certificate. The death certificate states disease of the brain. Medical knowledge now tells us this could have be many things but it is certain he could not look after himself, and thus ended up in the Poor House, like many of the Irish that came over during the famine.
It is strange that no next of kin signed his death certificate, that the poor house didn’t know his wife’s name and I’m certain the age of death is also wrong. Saying all of this I am lucky to have the death certificate and know that he survived the famine and got his family to safety in Scotland. Records even show that some of his grandchildren emigrated to Canada, maybe even whilst we was alive.
